We will return to the Dumb Stupid Los Angeles Travelogue in just a moment.

First -- a Public Service Announcement Regarding Pope Benedict XVI.

Yes, the guy was in the Hitler Jugend. Enrollment in this organization was all but mandatory in wartime Germany. Let's just all think about that before we start screaming: "Nazi Pope! Nazi Pope!" And last I checked, the Nazis weren't real fond of Catholics, either (for the first two years of its existence, Auschwitz was used primarily for the execution of Polish Catholics).

Believe me, I'm hardly a Defender of the Faith these days, and the last thing Catholicism needs is a guy that's even more of a hardass than John Paul II, but you know -- a little fucking perspective before anyone starts thinking about playing the "Nazi" card, hey?

Besides which, he's 78 years old. The Vatican most assuredly is not interested in another 25-year papacy. Benedict XVI is a seat warmer, make no mistake about that.
