A Memory of Kindness

For the past several mornings, Piewackit (Mephisto's mother) has been showing up at our back door. We hadn't seen her since December or so, when she was trapped by our neighbor and brought to the vet to be checked out.

As many of you remember, we spent most of last November and December dealing with a rather large colony of feral cats. Both of our little poppets, Foot Foot and Mephisto, hail from this colony. Piewackit was the scrappiest of the bunch. She was always tussling with rival cats or raccoons, and would turn up in our driveway looking pretty beat-up. She and her sister Mavis had seven kittens between them, and we found ourselves feeding them all and feeling rather helpless as to what to do. Fortunately, the universe stepped in and we found ourselves working with friends, neighbors, and a local no-kill shelter. Mavis was adopted by my friend Paul, Iggy went to live in Allston, Spats was taken in by a friend-of-a-friend, Fritz and Ghostface Killah went to a foster home, Mephisto wound up with us...by January, no more kitties were waiting in our driveway - they were all being taken care of somehow.

And now, suddenly, as we are packing up and moving away, here's Piewackit sitting on our back stoop every morning around 7. She scurries off the stoop when I open the door and is skittish as always, but looks clean and well-fed. She's come back, I suppose, because she knows we have her boy. Or she remembers us, and that here in our driveway is a memory of kindness.
